Focus Your Family Time There are lots of ways to walk to God. Slips of paper Pencil
Warm Up
Before your family activity, write the following descriptions on slips of paper--one item per slip: body builder, ballet dancer, gymnast, old man or old lady, fashion model, toddler, soldier, person walking in the snow, astronaut in space. Then, put all of the slips of paper in a hat or shoebox. With your family together, ask each person to dip into the hat and take a slip—and then, one at a time, walk like the person they picked, while everyone else tries to guess who the person is walking like.
Customize this activity for your own family: A young child, especially a non-reader, may need to work with an adult who can whisper a suggestion to him. Or—if this can be done with grace and respect and not mockery—family members can imitate the walk of other members of the immediate or extended family.
Wise Up
Read "Some of the Lord's followers think one day is more important than another. Others think all days are the same. But each of you should make up your own mind. Any followers who count one day more important than another day do it to honor their Lord. And any followers who eat meat give thanks to God, just like the ones who don't eat meat." Romans 14:5-6 "We must stop judging others. We must also make up our minds not to upset anyone's faith." Romans 14:13
Ask: What sorts of things do you feel Christians can disagree about or do differently, and still love God and each other? Say: There's not just one correct way to walk the Christian life—there are lots of ways. Christians who love Jesus worship and witness and pray in all sorts of ways. As long as love is our motivation, the world is wide open with opportunities to be a distinctive Christian with a flavor all our own. Teaching activity: Talk about ways some of the people you described on the slips of paper could demonstrate their love of God. For instance, how can a Christian fashion model or soldier or ballet dancer let the light of Christ shine in them among those they meet? Wrap Up Ask: What is your (or our) special kind of Christian walk? Do we know someone who has a Christian walk that is different from ours? Pray that your family will remember that God made each person unique and appreciate Christians who live their Christianity differently than you. |
